The KCTY Radio mission statement directs as primary purpose a hands-on educational radio experience. It also mandates cross-cultural diverse community programming. With this in mind, the faculty adviser and general manager have chosen to operate an expanded news module as part of the next two semesters. KCTY will offer an hour of news and current public affairs programming daily, giving the entire class the opportunity to be part of an up and rolling news department. The City News Stand offered daily Monday through Friday from 6-7 on The City KCTYfm.org. Look here for future programming announcements.
Guided by our mission statement, a coalition of interested KCTY club members and station alumni seek to join together to create a structure which will develop, coordinate and support completion of the application process to operate a low-power fm transmitter in the Long Beach area. KCTY, affiliated with Long Beach City College, seeks through FM transmission the opportunity to offer the Greater Long Beach area a variety of diverse community affairs and musical programming. –KCTY, the voice of Long Beach City College

This coalition, essentially KCTY Boosters, is formed for and concerned with exploring the feasibility of attaining a low power fm license. A block of low-power fm licenses are going to be made available sometime in 2012. KCTY Boosters short term-goal is creating and operating a radio studio capable of live broadcasts during the hours the LBCC studio is closed. This shall provide participating students a professional experience most like one they would experience in a commercial radio studio.
KCTY Boosters are conducting a feasibility study on the application process for the low-power fm radio transmitter licenses becoming available in 2012. KCTY is guided in part by a preparatory website devoted to community radio http://www.prometheusradio.org
“We value radio because it is easy to produce, free to consume, and accessible to more people across the world than any other mass media. Radio does not require expensive equipment, literacy, or a broadband connection. We believe in participatory radio because it is a proven tool for movement-building and cultural expression.”
Perhaps there are resources one has to share. Equipment, experience, donated space for a studio, these would all promote advancement of our mission here at KCTY.
